We provide specialist cover for journalists, NGOs and field teams operating in Pristina and across Kosovo.

Security context
The situation
Pristina is Kosovo's capital and the centre of the country's international community — home to the US Embassy, KFOR headquarters, EULEX mission and dozens of bilateral and multilateral programmes. The city is generally safe for international workers in terms of day-to-day security. Street crime is relatively low and the city functions normally for most purposes. However, Pristina's political environment is closely tied to the volatile Kosovo-Serbia relationship, which generates periodic demonstrations, political crises and the risk of deteriorating conditions.
Pristina has been the scene of demonstrations relating to Kosovo-Serbia negotiations — particularly around the Association of Serb Municipalities issue — domestic governance, and the periodic crises over north Kosovo. These demonstrations have occasionally involved clashes with police. The political atmosphere can shift quickly in response to developments in north Kosovo or in bilateral negotiations with Belgrade.
Medical infrastructure in Pristina is limited relative to Western European standards. Pristina University Clinical Centre is the primary referral hospital, but for complex trauma, neurosurgery or specialist treatment, evacuation to North Macedonia (Skopje) or further is standard. Planning for evacuation from Pristina is simpler than from north Kosovo given the functioning airport.
What to watch
Why it can be challenging
Political demonstrations and civil unrest risk
Pristina has experienced demonstrations that have escalated into confrontations with police. The political environment is sensitive to developments in Kosovo-Serbia relations and any perceived concessions on status or minority rights. Non-combatants should monitor political developments and avoid demonstrations.
Organised crime and political-criminal links
Kosovo has well-documented links between organised crime and political networks. High-profile political figures have been assassinated in Kosovo in previous years. While this risk is primarily targeted at domestic political actors, international workers with proximity to sensitive political investigations or economic interests may face secondary exposure.
North Kosovo risk for assignments extending to the north
Journalists and field workers who travel from Pristina to north Kosovo municipalities (particularly north Mitrovica, Leposavić, Zvečan and Zubin Potok) enter a substantially different and higher-risk environment. This must be disclosed and assessed separately.
Limited medical infrastructure
Pristina University Clinical Centre is the best available facility in Kosovo but has limited specialist capacity. Medical evacuation to Skopje is the standard plan for serious emergencies. This requires crossing the North Macedonia border and must be planned with realistic timelines.
