Standard travel insurance will not cover you in Ukraine - but we do.

Most policies contain explicit exclusions for war, armed conflict and civil unrest. If you are travelling to or working in Ukraine, you may have no protection at all — even if you believe you paid for a policy.

Yes — Conflict Cover provides specialist insurance for Ukraine.

Subject to full disclosure of your assignment, operating area and security arrangements. This cover is designed for journalists, NGO workers, contractors and other non-combatants who have a legitimate professional reason to be there.

    Country context

    What's happening in Ukraine

    The situation

A country in active armed conflict with Russia

Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which began in February 2022, has created a sustained armed conflict affecting the entire country. Eastern and southern Ukraine — including Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Kherson and parts of the Kharkiv region — are active combat zones. Ukrainian cities across the country face regular missile and drone attacks.

The international humanitarian and media presence in Ukraine is significant. Journalists, humanitarian workers, reconstruction teams and support personnel operate in varying conditions from Lviv (relatively stable) to the front-line areas near Bakhmut and Avdiivka (extremely dangerous). The risk level varies enormously by location and changes rapidly as the front lines shift.

For non-combatants working in Ukraine, specialist insurance is a baseline operational requirement. Standard policies exclude war zones. Cover should account for the possibility of evacuation, injury from missile/drone strikes, and the distinct risks of frontline proximity versus rear areas.

    What to watch

    • Russian missile and drone attack patterns targeting Ukrainian cities, infrastructure and power systems
    • Front-line shifts in Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions
    • Ukrainian air defence capability and interception rates over key cities
    • Civilian evacuation requirements from eastern Ukrainian cities

    Why it can be challenging

    Risk factors across Ukraine

Nationwide missile and drone attacks on infrastructure

Russia conducts regular ballistic missile, cruise missile and Shahed drone attacks targeting Ukrainian power infrastructure, transport networks and population centres. No city in Ukraine is fully safe from these attacks.

Active front-line combat zones in the east and south

Artillery exchanges, armoured operations and aerial bombardment occur continuously along the front lines in Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson. Front-line proximity exponentially increases the risk to all personnel.

Unexploded ordnance across previously occupied and contested areas

Areas that have seen fighting are heavily contaminated with mines, cluster munitions and unexploded ordnance. This affects Kherson region, Kharkiv region, Donetsk and areas south of Kyiv. UXO remains a major long-term risk.

Rapidly changing security conditions requiring flexible planning

The military situation in Ukraine can change significantly within hours. Operations, evacuations and movements must be planned with real-time information and the capacity to adapt quickly to changed circumstances.

    Regional relevance

Cover across Ukraine, not just one city

People rarely search for "Ukraine" alone — they search for where they are actually going. Conflict Cover is written for work and travel across the whole country, including:

Cover depends on accurate disclosure of where people are going and what they will be doing.

What happens if something goes wrong?

Support in real time, not just a claim later

If there is a medical emergency or serious incident in Ukraine, Northcott Global Solutions can be contacted 24/7. They are an operational crisis response team — not a call centre.

They can help assess the situation, coordinate treatment, support evacuation where required, and manage the case through to a safer outcome.

"This is one of the key differences between specialist high-risk cover and ordinary travel insurance."

    24/7 availability

The NGS team can be reached around the clock — weekends, public holidays, and in the middle of a fast-moving situation.

    Medical coordination

From identifying appropriate local care to arranging full medical evacuation, NGS manages the process from the first call.

    Team deployments

Managing cover for a team in Ukraine? NGS can coordinate support for multiple individuals across different locations simultaneously.

    Continuity of cover

Cover does not stop when you return home

If you are injured while covered, eligible personal accident benefits can continue after you return to your country of domicile, subject to the policy terms.

That matters. Many policies stop at the point you leave the country where the incident happened. Ours does not.
