Sudan is one of the clearest examples of why specialist insurance matters. It is a high-risk and conflict-affected environment where standard travel insurance is unlikely to provide meaningful protection when it matters most.
This is specialist cover designed for journalists, NGOs, contractors, researchers and operational teams whose work still requires them to travel and operate in extremely difficult conditions.
What's included
Designed for non-combatants working in environments where standard insurance often fails.
Sudan is not a place where a standard policy is likely to be enough.
The challenge is not only the level of risk. It is also the practical difficulty of operating in an environment where routes, local access, services and response options may all be restricted.
Country context
The situation
Sudan descended into civil war in April 2023 when fighting broke out between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Khartoum. The conflict has caused one of the world's largest displacement crises, with millions of Sudanese fleeing the fighting. The RSF has committed widespread atrocities including mass killings, sexual violence and ethnic targeting in Darfur.
Khartoum has been extensively damaged by urban fighting. Most international organisations evacuated in April 2023 and have maintained minimal in-country presence since. Operations have been conducted primarily from Nairobi, Cairo and Port Sudan. Access to conflict-affected areas is extremely limited and dangerous.
For non-combatants considering work in Sudan, the humanitarian need is vast but the security environment is among the most dangerous in the world. Both the SAF and RSF have interfered with humanitarian operations, detained aid workers and conducted attacks on aid supply routes.
What to watch
Why it can be challenging
Active urban combat with mass civilian casualties
Fighting in Khartoum and Omdurman has involved artillery, airstrikes and urban combat. RSF forces have occupied residential areas, used civilians as human shields and committed mass atrocities. Operating in contested areas is extremely dangerous.
RSF atrocities targeting civilians in Darfur
RSF forces in North Darfur have conducted ethnic mass killings, systematic rape and the targeting of civilians perceived as non-Arab. El Fasher is under sustained threat. UN characterisation approaches genocide.
Deliberate interference with humanitarian operations
Both parties have seized aid supplies, detained humanitarian workers and used aid infrastructure for military purposes. There is no reliable protection framework for humanitarian operations.
Near-total collapse of civil and medical infrastructure
Sudan's healthcare system has largely collapsed in conflict areas. Hospitals have been occupied, looted and bombed. Emergency medical evacuation requires transport to Egypt, Kenya or other neighbouring countries.
Can you get insurance for Sudan?
We provide specialist insurance for non-combatants travelling to Sudan for professional and operational reasons.
This cover is built for real working conditions in an environment where infrastructure, access, medical support and evacuation can all be severely constrained.
Why this matters in Sudan
Sudan is not a place where a standard policy is likely to be enough. The challenge is not only the level of risk. It is also the practical difficulty of operating in an environment where routes, local access, services and response options may all be restricted.
That means serious travellers and organisations need cover that is built for the truth of the environment and backed by real-world support if something goes wrong.
That is where specialist cover matters.
Practical relevance
Cover for non-combatants working where conflict conditions have made standard insurance unavailable or insufficient.
Medical treatment following an incident where local facilities may be limited and evacuation support needs to be coordinated.
Support where safe routes, transport options and access are all constrained by the environment.
Support for NGOs, journalists and operational teams working under sustained pressure in one of the most difficult environments in the region.
Emergency support
NGS provides 24/7 support. They can assess the situation, help coordinate treatment, support evacuation where possible, and manage the case through to a safer outcome.
You are not relying on a policy alone. You have access to real-world support in an environment where that matters most.
Continuity
Yes. Eligible personal accident benefits can continue after you return to your country of domicile, subject to the policy terms.
That helps provide continuity if the impact of an incident continues after you leave the country.
Exclusions
Being clear about exclusions helps buyers know exactly what this policy is for and where separate cover may be needed.
This policy is designed to protect people, not possessions.
Cover not included
Activity exclusions
Property exclusions
These covers can be arranged separately if required.
